Whether you're an AeroPress aficionado or new to the brewing scene, this deep dive offers valuable insights into what the XL brings to the coffee table. Dive in to find out if it's time to make the switch or upgrade!
Introduction
I've spent years with the original AeroPress. From my first cup to my thousandth, its brewing magic has remained a constant in my daily routine. When the AeroPress XL landed on my desk, I was both intrigued and skeptical. Can you really improve on something that's already close to perfection?
Unboxing: First Impressions
Opening the AeroPress XL box felt like greeting an old friend with a new look. Inside, the AeroPress XL Chamber, Plunger, Filter Cap & Seal awaited — all promising the classic AeroPress brew but on a larger scale. Alongside these components were 100 larger-sized paper micro-filters, the iconic AeroPress paddle stirrer, and a coffee scoop.
The standout? Definitely the AeroPress Carafe. Crafted with Tritan™, it boasts clarity, strength, and a generous 20 oz (600 ml) capacity. A promising start indeed!
Build & Design
Upon handling the AeroPress XL, its heft is immediately noticeable. Retaining the safe materials of its predecessor, it remains BPA and phthalate-free. Its larger size necessitates a slight alteration in grip, but after a few attempts, it became second nature, much like the original AeroPress.
The Brewing Experience
The original AeroPress was an exercise in brewing control, and the XL continues the tradition. Its nominal capacity stands at 500ml, but if you're familiar with the inverted method, you can dare to stretch it to about 550ml.
A word of caution here: if you decide to employ the inverted method with the XL, please exercise precautions. With my years of practice, I'm comfortable with the maneuver, but it's always best to be safe! For those, like me, who appreciate the no-bypass brewing trend, the XL feels like it was designed just for us. Essentially, your brewing potential feels boundless.
Taste Test
Brewing with the XL was akin to revisiting a favorite book but with additional chapters. The coffee was as smooth and robust as I remembered, and the larger filters ensured a grit-free experience.
Clean-Up
One of the charms of the original AeroPress was its fuss-free cleanup. With the XL's introduction, I harbored concerns, but they were unfounded. Cleaning remained a breeze.
Value & Conclusion
The AeroPress XL offers more than just a larger capacity. It brings with it an enhanced brewing experience, a new carafe, and an opportunity for richer brews. While it does come at a higher price point than its predecessor, for many enthusiasts, the added features and benefits justify the investment.
What Users Are Saying
While my experience with the AeroPress XL has been overwhelmingly positive, it mirrors the sentiments of many in the coffee community. A quick browse through forums and review sites echoes appreciation for its enhanced capacity and the inclusion of the new carafe.
